Ms. Gifford specializes in construction accident and defect litigation and general product liability defense. She has also achieved success in plaintiff personal injury cases. Prior to joining Stevens, Drummond & Gifford, she was a partner in a statewide insurance defense firm and senior associate in a Los Angeles construction defect firm.
Ms. Gifford successfully sued a national chain store on behalf of a young female employee who was raped at gunpoint by a disgruntled former employee who had been targeting young women at store closing. To obviate the Labor Code bar, she alleged an inventive civil rights cause of action. The employer defendant settled for six-figures on the eve of hearing summary judgment on the Labor Code bar. She and her partner also obtained policy limits settlements in a products liability case where plaintiff’s hand passed beneath an inadequate guard and entered the in-rolling feed of an industrial printer-slotter. Plaintiff’s hand was degloved and later reconstructed using his latissimus muscles, skin grafts and surgical amputation of his big toe to reconstruct a “thumb” and physical pinch point on his hand.
As managing partner, Ms. Gifford monitors the firm’s time and cost entries to assure accuracy, reasonableness and compliance with clients’ individual billing criteria. She also oversees the preparation of complex writing assignments such as critical motions, trial and appellate briefs.
Ms. Gifford has practiced law in the San Francisco Bay area for more than twenty-six years. She received a B.A. in international communications from the University of Washington in 1981 and a juris doctor degree from McGeorge School of Law at the University of the Pacific in 1984 and was admitted the same year to the California bar. She is also admitted to practice before the federal district courts and is a member of the Defense Research Institute and the Contra Costa County Bar Association.
Ms. Gifford studies yoga and in December 2009 completed an eighteen month advanced studies course. She also volunteers at several charitable organizations including an animal wildlife hospital.
